In-Flight, A journey. Women’s Christian College play ‘07

Watched the play ‘In Flight- A journey‘ at Women’s Christian College, my Alma Mater. This year’s play is directed by Yog Japee, a well known theatre and film personality.

In Flight is a series of four modern plays -“Moving Shortly” and “Relative Strangers” by Sheri Wilner, “Wendy’s Tale” by Alan Haehnel and “Emotional Baggage” by Nina Shenigold..I quote from the college play brochure ” The journey is inevitably more memorable than the destination” and we must learn to accept life as it is and live with it! All the plays are integrated into a kind of movie within a play kind of sequence…Great use of minimal sets and casual stage-friendly costumes. Shruthi Abraham, Esther Shalom Simick and Lapdiang A.Syiem are worth mentioning for their histrionic abilities…Sigh, it was good to be back…reminiscing about the old days when I was in the cast…I experienced quite a lot of that has happened to me and I feel like this moments..

My addiction to plays started right there, in W.C.C’s comfy auditorium, squeezed among strange people, watching young women performing on the varnished wood stage. Somewhere along the line, I thought “I want to do that too“[In the lines of a character from the movie Dance With Me]. The first play I watched(my favourite) is The Diary Of Anne Frank ‘95. I fell in love with the costumes, mikes, rehearsals, voice warm ups… Acted in two plays Anton In Show Business ‘03 under Bhagirathi Narayan’s direction(she was the first person who made me believe my role till I cried) and The Hypochondriack ‘04 under Magic Lantern’s Praveen (sly bugger actually improved me quite a bit…got me out of my shell…

About the College Play:

  • The theatre tradition of W.C.C started in 1917 with Galava’s Revenge & Julius Caesar. Tamil and Malayalam plays have also been staged. The 40 or so plays that W.C.C has staged have had theatre greats like Bhaghyam (Bhagirathi Narayan), Prof.Rajani, Sushma Ahuja, Mithran Devanesan, Ms Ammu Mathew, Yamuna Prabhu, Noushir Ratnakar, Elizabeth Roy, Jnani, Praveen and Hans Koushik in the Director’s Chair.
  • It is the main source of income for the College Culturals FEST-EVE.
  • It is fully managed by the students through different committees- Sets &Props,Costumes & Make up, Script writing,Stage Management, Tickets, Sponsorship, Publicity,Lights, Sound, Seating & Discipline and Hospitality.
  • It is a great exercise in P.R. both for the college as well as for the students involved.
  • Cameraderie flourishes and the bonds forged during the play will never be shaken off.
  • Multi-tasking is the key to juggling academic and personal interests..I learned that…Theatre gave me the zest to work, not to count the cost to me but to get the work done, to take responsibilities and stick to them.

I wanted to write down this day before the details escape me….The day started well went badly and then ended well. The bloody bitch [I would use more expletives but then my PG13 certi would go kaput wouldn't it?] in my office was snickering at me through out…HATE HER HATE HER HATE HER…arrrrggggh! Actually had invited Arun, Kishore, Sunil and D. Out of that, Sunil went off to look after his mum who’s ill, Kishore went off without telling me…not going to forgive him for that..and definitely not D.I want to talk about that…but not here :( need A for the catharsis….D’s let me down again..He’s shown he doesn’t care…so I’ll take my judgement of having pronounced him a very emoti-smart male…guess that’s jus a figment of my imagination….The Winner Of the Evening=Arun. Arun cheta, You Rock! Poor guy, I said I wouldn’t tell anyone, but…this is too good to resist…Two things that should never happen to a young guy(the poor sweet soul’s only 23) in a WOMEN’S college happened to him:

  • He got caught( by me) wearing his official ID card around his neck and looking all lost and vada-like.
  • He got called Uncle by a chick at the token counter…saaaaaaaaaad man..my sympathies…Now he feels like he’s old enough and should me asking his mum to fix up a girl to wed.

Now that I’ve put my life in some considerable danger..I think I’ll go to bed now…gotta work tomorrow and the bitch better not cross paths with me…
