I was a bouncer, naa nana naa na!! I gotta be a bouncer at Vedanth’s Minstrels and Magic concert! A rather timid one but a bouncer none the less! Vedanth Bharadwaj’s music left me thinking- Man! does the guy have a voice or what!!! Wow!
Sadly there was a severe space crunch at the Alliance Audtitorium (TOP STOREY). We were surprised at the HUGE crowd that turned up…though the concert started on the dot at 6.30, people were coming in till 8.15! The guys who turned up to listen to their favorite bhajan didnt seem to mind standing thru it all…some unfortunate ones who dint get place inside had their ears glued to the doors trying to catch the music…It really warmed my heart to see a lot of people who turned up after work tired but determined to listen…Bouncer success was reached cos all the folks were real well behaved and dint throw tantrums on being made to wait outside till each song was over( we opened the doors only after each song cos otherwise the noise pollution was overpowering!) But, the RESULT of offering to help Seema= A bouncer has to stay outside and cannot pretend to be a guest! I got the C.D yesterday itself as a consolation to myself!
I love all the songs in his album Mati Kahe….jus 200Rs for a great soul stirring collection of music…I believe music brings the right amount of devotion to all spiritual pursuits…I am Christian but the works of the saints of the Bhakti Movement(13th to 17th Century) really reached out to me…Thanks to Seema for organising this concert or I would never have heard these bhajans…The other musicians at the concert were Anil Srinivasan, Gurupriya Srinivasan, Andrea Jeremiah and Neil…. The album has 7 tracks, all of them make great listening….But, I personally love these- Binati Jana written by Suradasa ( sung in the concert by Andrea in her husky, rich voice), Sumirana Kar Le written by Guru Nanaka, Kinare Lagav written by Mirabai and Jiva prani written by Namadeva(I was moved to tears by this one)….GOsh, they completely revive sagging spirits!I cant get Binati Jana out of my head….Vedanth has put his guitar to good use….I think this is how music should be, with timeless lyrics that reach out to across religions…Vedanth himself is really refreshing to listen to, for the man has no haughty airs and certainly no notions of being treated like a rock star. Why, he dint even have a script to introduce each bhajan and made up for it with passionate words bout each track…his dreamy yet earthy demeanor endeared him immensely to the audience as was evident by the huge crowd that showed up for the concert and loyally stood through it due to space constraints!
